Headfort Old Golf Course
Kells, County Meath

The original course at Headfort Golf Club is a classic parkland golf course routed through majestic mature trees that adorn the old Headfort Estate. It is a relatively short course, on relatively flat terrain with a straightforward routing that should not over-penalise wayward play and allow the splendour of the surroundings to be enjoyed to the fullest.
Headfort Old Course Description
The Old Course offers a traditional parkland experience with mature tree-lined fairways, natural water hazards, and strategic bunkering. It is a par 72 layout measuring approximately 6,100 yards, making it shorter than the newer course but no less enjoyable. Established in 1928, the course has evolved over the decades while retaining its classic design.
The fairways weave through the historic Headfort Estate, surrounded by centuries-old hardwood trees that add both beauty and challenge. Water hazards, including the River Blackwater, come into play on several holes, demanding accuracy and smart decision-making. Well-protected greens, often elevated or sloping, test approach shots and putting.
Among its standout holes, the par-4 4th requires a well-placed drive to navigate a tight, tree-lined dogleg. The 9th, a picturesque par 3, features a water hazard guarding the green, demanding a precise tee shot. The par-5 17th is a great risk-reward hole, with water running along the left side and tempting longer hitters.
With its scenic setting, strategic design, and mature parkland charm, the Old Course remains a favorite for those who appreciate a classic test of golf. Though it may not have the length or modern touches of the New Course, it rewards precision, course management, and an appreciation for the natural beauty of the Headfort Estate.
